can I recommend a book?
Night Lamp by Jack Vance is a great sci fi story but it also opens with a sequence whereby a couple of musicologists travel to remote and obscure planets recording the music of the local inhabitants. Just recently I discovered this album at Listen and realised such an occupations was a real thing. Neat
